Mary Jane Ashley

Tobacco Control in Ontario: A History of the Past 20 Years

Trained in medicine, public health and epidemiology, Dr. Ashley holds the rank of professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences, University of Toronto and is a principal investigator in the Ontario Tobacco Research Unit. She chaired the expert panel that reported to the Ontario Minister of Health in 1999 on the renewal of the Ontario Tobacco Strategy (Actions will Speak Louder than Words). Some of her recent research interests include issues concerning tobacco industry connections with the academic community and the knowledge and attitudes of the public and Canadian legislators with respect to tobacco and tobacco control.

Pam Ling

Hot Young Things: Secrets of Tobacco Industry Marketing to Young Adults

Pam Ling is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of California San Francisco, where she conducts research on tobacco, media, and social marketing to young people. Her work includes analyses of thousands of previously secret tobacco industry documents detailing marketing strategies targeting young adults. She currently works with Dr. Stanton Glantz developing ways to use these strategies to improve tobacco control programs.

Fenton Howell

Mission Impossible? Smoke-Free Irish Workplaces, Including Bars

Dr. Howell, the current Spokesperson for ASH Ireland, is a Specialist in Public Health Medicine and is the Director of Public Health in the North Eastern Health District. He is the Dean of the Faculty of Public Health Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland and Past President of the Irish Medical Organisation, the Section of Epidemiology and Public Health of the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland. He is a former Chairperson of ASH Ireland and treasurer of the European Network on Smoking Prevention.

Michael Perley

Current And Future Issues In Second-Hand Smoke

In April 1993, Michael Perley joined the Ontario Campaign for Action on Tobacco (OCAT) as Campaign Director to manage OCAT's program to encourage the provincial government to pass the Tobacco Control Act. The Act was proclaimed on November 30, 1994. Since then, he has worked with campaigns in support of smoke-free workplace and public place policies in Ontario, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec and Nova Scotia.

Peter Selby

Cessation - Thinking Outside The Box

Dr. Selby is the Head of the Nicotine Dependence Clinic at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health as well as Assistant Professor, Departments of Family and Community Medicine, Public Health Sciences and Psychiatry at the University of Toronto. Some of his areas of research include smoking cessation: Zyban in the retreatment of relapsed smokers and web-based interventions: The Stop Smoking Centre among others.

Lorraine Fry

Lunch Closing Speaker, Friday, May 7 - 12:45 pm - 2:00 pm
The Next 10 Years

Lorraine Fry is the general manager of the Non-Smokers' Rights Association and the Smoking and Health Action Foundation, a position she has held for the past 7 years. She is the co-chair of the Ontario Tobacco Strategy Steering Committee's Coordinating Committee, and the chair of the Canadian Coalition for Action on Tobacco (CCAT), a national coalition of health charities, associations and NGOs working together on tobacco control issues. Her expertise as a strategist and facilitator in achieving effective public policy and legislation stems from over 25 years of experience in community organizing, advocacy and politics.
