Simon Chapman
Named as one of the 10 “smartest” people working in Australian
health and medicine by Australia’s Bulletin magazine, Simon Chapman,
Professor in Public Health at the University of Sydney, is a sociologist whose
PhD examined the semiotics of cigarette advertising. He is author of 11 books
and major government reports, 202 papers and 112 letters and commentaries in
peer reviewed journals and the editor of the British Medical Journal's specialist
journal, Tobacco Control. His main research interests are in
tobacco control, media discourses on health and illness and risk communication. He
has won many awards including the World Health Organisation's World No Tobacco
Day Medal in 1997 and the American Cancer Society’s Luther Terry Award
for outstanding individual leadership in tobacco control in 2003.
Rob Cushman
Dr. Cushman was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Champlain Local Health
Integration Network in August 2005. From 1996 to 2005, Dr. Robert
Cushman held the position of Medical Officer of Health for the City of Ottawa,
where he was instrumental in bringing in smoke-free legislation for workplaces
and public places. Previously, he was Director of Public Health in Hull,
Québec. A pioneer in Canada for bike helmet promotion
and a champion for “Success by Six,” Dr. Cushman has become known
for his work in injury prevention and early childhood development. He received
the United Way of Ottawa’s Volunteer of the Year Award in 2003 and
Life Service Award by the City of Ottawa in September 2005.
Michael Perley
As Director of the Ontario Campaign for Action on Tobacco since 1993, Michael
Perley has played a key role in the passage of the Tobacco Control
Act (1994), the Smoke-Free Ontario Act (2005) and dozens of municipal
smoke-free bylaws. Michael has also advised tobacco control coalitions
in several other provinces, and participates in numerous joint Ontario
government-NGO tobacco control initiatives.
